There is a project RUSXMMS, wich add teg reconvert on the fly function to xmms (http://sourceforge.net/projects/rusxmms). Hope it'll be merged to XMMS someday.
Ideal result - user variable for all mp3tags, wich works with all applications (MPD, totem, phythmbox, XMMS, Mplayer, ...).
