As mentioned in Debian Bug 510413, this is fixed in xchat-2.8.8 with patch from upstream: http://xchat.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xchat?view=rev&revision=1367
A fixed version of xchat-2.8.6 with that patch is in my PPA.
