I've found that the GUI does come up if run as 'sudo'. I'll change the title to indicate that this is a hanging problem, as well as terrible user feedback if 'sudo' is not specified (and it shouldn't be; most admin utilities will request root access if they need it).
** Summary changed: - hp-setup won't start under Oneiric + hp-setup hangs system under Oneiric unless run 'sudo' ** Description changed: The hp-setup program won't start up under Oneiric Beta 1. I've tried under gdm and lightdp, though I doubt it matters (it behaves the same in - any case). + any case). What does matter, though is 'sudo'. It behaves appropriately + if run as a 'sudo' command (that is, as root). When I run it from the command line, the terminal window will fill with messages like: (Python:6905): GTK_CRITICAL **: IF_gdk_widget_style_get: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET(Widget)' failed After a long time it will bring up a window but it will be transparent except for the frame and title bar. The system at this point becomes unresponsive; I have to forcibly reboot the system.
