I stopped the incessant pop-ups by going to /var/crash and moving the crash reports elsewhere then rebooting the system.
Once back at the desktop I received one crash pop-up for zeitigest-demon which was reported to launchpad as expected. Since then I have had no further crashes or pop-ups.
