Hi Peter, indeed, that seems to be the primary use case that causes people to encounter this crash (please see my comment 8). I've opened a new bug report for this at bug 839257.
Btw, even with this other bug, I would expect you not to get this crash if you have the latest software-center. Could you please check your version by opening a terminal and typing: apt-cache policy software-center and reporting the version number result here? The fix should be in 4.1.21.
