This happens on an Intel 965wgh motherboard. You receive the error (as detailed above). After boot, an ifconfig shows everything is working correctly (kernel sees interface, etc.) however, nothing works.
I came across this article: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2536420 that describes downloading a utility from Intel to reset the interface. I built up a bootable CD, did it and now everything works.
