Updating the sound drivers as per comment #11 (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules) solved the problem on my Acer 3830TG running Ubuntu 11.04. I had no sound whatsoever on internal speakers or headphones previous to the update, apart from the beep when connecting/disconneting the charger. Thanks for your help.
