@Paul: I have the same problem like you, and your work-around using ~/.gvfs works for me too - thanks! @Kim: I have no problems opening an existing file, only to save to a new file on a samba share. Then I see the error you wrote in comment 3. But I never saw a password dialog. I mark this bug as a duplicate. Your initial problem in this bug description seems a bit different. So if you do not agree then just remove the duplicate status again!
