You could try oneiric if you wanted to. I have it running on some Atom-
class machines with 1 GB of RAM, and while it's not incredibly snappy
it's not terrible either.

You could also try running Unity 2D (apt-get install unity-2d, then
select it as your session when logging in). It uses 2D graphics instead
of 3D, so it's generally less resource-intensive.
