This does occur in LibreOffice too. The problem is the "Format Paintbrush" affects the whole paragraph instead of just the part you want to change. It always happens when the font is changed from the default "Times New Roman" to something else e.g. Arial.
Example: you have some text that's red, highlighted, a different size and bold and you want to apply this elsewhere. You select that formatted text and then use the "Format Paintbrush" to apply it somewhere else in the document. When you do that, the whole paragraph changes instead of just the part you changed with the Format Paintbrush.
