Hm, yeah, I agree that the button selection-style could be more obvious.
Unfortunately - at least when using the murrine engine - we don't have the 
choice you mention. What we can do is change the style to show a colored 
rectangle within the button (which looks rather fugly in my opinion, that's why 
I originally decided against it).

You can try themes like "MurrinaBlue" (which should be installed in a
default xubuntu installation iirc) to see what the effect looks like.
