i haven't yet reproduced this but i suspect it will happen to me at the
next boot. i'm running an update now and the grub update step has been
hanging since about 30 minutes at this step:

Generating grub.cfg ...
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-30-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-30-generic

ubuntu 10.10 on x86/64.

CPU is showing no unusual activity, but this looks interesting:

[stephan@cheyenne:~]$ ps -ef | grep grub
root 21418 21240 0 12:32 pts/10 00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig
-o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
root 21975 21418 0 13:09 pts/10 00:00:00 /bin/sh
/etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+
root 21986 21975 0 13:09 pts/10 00:00:00 /bin/sh
/etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+
root 21987 21986 0 13:09 pts/10 00:00:00 /bin/sh
/etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+
root 21994 21987 0 13:09 pts/10 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/grub-probe --device
/dev/sda2 --target=drive
stephan 22066 1951 0 13:14 pts/7 00:00:00 grep grub

killing the 20_memtest86+ processes caused the upgrade to continue, but
then hang a short while later again when it (again) tries to update
grub. Killing the grub processes kills the upgrade.

Re-running update-grub after that also hangs, however, and the process
list looks like:

root 27535 22075 0 13:19 pts/7 00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig
-o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
root 27568 27535 0 13:19 pts/7 00:00:00 /bin/sh /etc/grub.d/00_header
root 27600 27568 0 13:19 pts/7 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/grub-probe --device
/dev/sda2 --target=drive

so i suspect strongly that i'm screwed on my next reboot.
