@Michael Gilbert:  I just did a apt-get update && apt-get install xpdf
and the resulting xpdf still core dumps.  Am I missing something?

$ xpdf fu.pdf
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ gdb xpdf
[...]
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/bin/xpdf 

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x00007ffff71aeecb in GlobalParams::findFontFile(GooString*, char**) ()
   from /usr/lib/libpoppler.so.13
