Don't know. Tried again a few days later and the GNOME 3 desktop loaded
fine (just strained against my spare computer's feeble specs).
Presumably some update in the last week fixed whatever the cause of the
problem was.
If it crashes again I'll try the workaround. With effort going into
stabilising unity, GNOME 3 looks fragile at the moment.
