Note - the above comment should probably be moved to bug #86184. Also, I totally concur with the comments in #140. There has been too much emphasis in Ubuntu on adding flashy new features that end users really don't need, and much too little in actually fixing bugs like this one. In particular, I completely agree with regard to Unity. I must point out however, that some changes, such as the transition to Gnome 3, are pretty much beyond the control of Canonical.
