It appears I am having this problem in Feisty on Thinkpad T40.  The
distro is up-to-date.   The card will just randomly stop working every
20 minutes or so.  To bring it back, usually it is enough to run ifdown
and ifup, but sometimes I needed to repeatedly reinsert the kernel
module.  The card is configured to use DHCP.

It sounds either like a faulty radio card, or some kind of
driver/firmware issue.  It's hard to believe this would be caused by
some high level scripting code.
