So, yeah, someone screwed up texlive.  And considering that Debian is
nixing teTeX since nobody develops it anymore, and since texlive-2007 is
coming out soon (or already came out), they're transitioning over to it.
So, why is it completely broken over here in the Ubuntu world?  Hrmm?
