This is a severe issue, as it might lead to damaged hardware. Suspend to RAM is the default for several situations (closing lid, idling in battery mode, ...). To me it already happend twice that I didn't recognize the crash immediately. The laptop got extremely hot as the cpu seems to run crazy in these crashes.
