The answer is no. If the usb disk cable is not plugged in, the usb
printer is detected as soon as it is powered on. So, it would appear
that the problem is with usb disk support. Still not good.

In case it helps, here is the lsusb output. The usb disk is device
2-5. There are a mouse and a speaker usb connection. I don't know what
1-1 and 2-1 are. All devices are plugged into the rear usb ports on
the pc (front ports not used).
