Marc, After the upgrade, go to /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log. Just before the crash entries at the end of the log, you'll see a list of packages that were flagged for removal.
Just "sudo apt-get remove --purge copy/paste the list of packages here" and you should be good to go. For the record, I did this four time and it never hosed my system, the upgrade itself went very smoothly.
