Hi Krzysztof, The gcc version with which your kernel was compiled depends on that of the builder server that compiled the particular kernel. Not all of them are up to date with the latest gcc version, but that shouldn't affect your kernel or its performance.
The 3.0.0-999-generic version string seems to indicate a mainline kernel. Here are some Ubuntu stock kernels for comparison. This Oneiric kernel I installed from updates today is built with GCC 4.6.1, the one you state as the latest: Linux version 3.0.0-5-generic (buildd@rothera) (gcc version 4.6.1 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.1-2ubuntu2) ) #6-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 12 05:14:17 UTC 2011 Look at the version strings from a Lucid (10.04) kernel: Linux version 2.6.32-28-generic (buildd@palmer) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 21:21:01 UTC 2011 And this from my own Natty system: Linux version 2.6.38-8-generic (buildd@allspice) (gcc version 4.5.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.5.2-8ubuntu3) ) #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:24 UTC 2011 I'll mark this report as invalid but if you have a specific reason why you believe the use of an older gcc version to complile the kernel to be a bug, please feel free to reopen the report and state your rationale.
