I have the same problem in kubuntu feisty. I want to be able to install
the official nvidia drivers, but if i remove nvidia-kernel-common
package, i have to remove all this packages:

linux linux-generic linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-15-generic
  linux-restricted-modules-generic nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-2.6.20-15-generic
  nvidia-kernel-common

Because of this dependencies i can't remove nvidia-kernel-common package and
install the nvidia driver that i want. I can't download a driver from nvidia
site and build it myself.
Please, let the users choose which nvidia driver they want to install in their
PC.
