After adding the timer applet, a small rectangular space appears (see
attachment). After that, it justs sits there and occupies space without
showing any reaction to clicking (either left or right button). Thus it
is totally unusable and I'm not even sure what to expect. No menu ever
pops up.

I can bring up some configuration dialog from the menu bar's main
configuration window, when selecting the applets configuration there. In
this dialog i can setup the timers, but still the applet itself doesn't
react to anything.

I hope that was somehow comprehensible.
