I can confirm it happens with me as well, typically when dragging
something within a program such as Mendeley or OpenOffice. Toggling Num
Lock key does indeed solve the problem.

  On all 3 systems where I have installed Ubuntu Natty I've seen this bug.
  At seemingly random points in time, the Unity launcher will stop
  autohiding, obscuring both maximized applications and "windowed"
  applications that sit under the launcher. I'm typically running Emacs
  and Opera, so perhaps this combination is relevant.
  
  Today I've discovered that toggling the Num Lock state on the keyboard
  makes the launcher hide. This seems to make no sense, but it is what I
  observe.
