Ok, I got rid of this bug. I had installed nm-applet from the sources
earlier. This caused the binary files to be located in /usr/local/sbin
and /usr/local/bin. Those are earlier in my $PATH and they did not get
overwritten with apt-get install --re-install NetworkManager.

So removing the old binaries from /usr/local/sbin and /usr/local/bin
solved the problem for me.

** Changed in: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => Fix Released
