I solved this problem on my ThinkPad X61t by shutting down and then removing external power and battery for half an hour. It seems the firmware for the ethernet port gets into some stuck state and cannot be reset with warm boot or cold boot. This problem has happened twice in sixteen months or so, no idea if it's related to the kernel.
