Every time I go to use the floppy disk, I find it broken and need to
hack my system to fix it.

I just did a clean install of 11.04, and the first thing I found was
that, as Ian pointed out, my user did not have permission to access the
floppy drive. But giving my user access did not solve the problem. I am
unable to downgrade udisks because the package->force version is grayed
out, and I can't figure out a way to let synaptic know about older
versions.

Could this PLEASE be one of the things that is always tested on every
version update?
