Having installed 11.04 (32bit, clean install) on the same machine, the play/pause button works correctly. This is in the default music player (Banshee) controls, using laptop hotkeys and using menu bar quick access controls. This was tried with both the unity and standard gnome desktops. I don't know why this did not seem to work correctly from the live CD, maybe it was due to one of the updates that was downloaded after the initial installation?
