gutenprint 5.2.7 does it. Now ubuntu should add 5.2.7 as default. Much easier, initially I thought cups was the driver, didn't know it was gutenprint I'll report myself to the people of the ink level check. So, the driver of http://www.openprinting.org/driver/gutenprint (download 5.2.7 deb) does the job.
