Ah, sorry for the delay in responding. Yeah, that may have been the best way to do it. Reinstalling ubuntu desktop will install all the default supported applications as long as the PPA's have been removed from sources.list.
Unfortunately, no there is no easy way to tell from the log files. Hopefully we will have a nice tool to do that soon.
