It's as if there are multiple copies of xfdesktop running, however a ps aux | grep desktop shows only one process. Note the attached image with different desktop backgrounds. The square area in the upper left is as a result of a right mouse click to show a menu and what is rendered there now is the result of the redraw after the menu disappeared.
