As reported elsewhere---gscan2pdf (from sourceforge) will scan with a GUI. I added the gscan repository to apt: deb http://gscan2pdf.sourceforge.net/download/debian binary/
then used Synaptic to install with all the depends except sane (sane frontend). this software works very well & looks to be a great workaround until Xsane is fixed.
