This is with nvidia-glx-new enabled. By "slow" I mean: while rendering an application window, I can almost see individual subparts being rendered (for example, when I Alt-Tab to bring Synaptic in front, the lower-right text pane that contains the text description of the current selected item in the packages list is initially empty, so is the lower-left box of buttons (Section, Status, Origin...). Then I see the text description of the currently selected package, the buttons appear on the left side and lastly the line with the current package changes in color a bit, suggesting that It got selected. This seems like X takes a while to respond to messages form applications.
