After doing some checking, the issue seems to occur when ubiquity does a
swapoff, because there isn't enough physical memory to stop using swap
at this point.

Killing some processes (applets, atd, hpi, cron, etc..) prior to
starting install let's things continue working.

Perhaps even running swapoff before starting the installer will help
too.
