It seems like I jumped too soon. I ran sudo update-grub again when I had finished my gentoo install, and the debian redundancies are back - there are now 5 debian entries as before, and 3 slackware entries. The arch and gentoo entries are singletons. Of course, there is only a single kernel on the partitions indicated as before, and linux-boot-prober is the culprit.
