I have a similar problem with the atheros 5001 card. Wireless worked in Maverick but not in Natty.
For Me: If I plug in the Ethernet cable to a active port (switch box or hub or modem or crossover to another computer) it also activates the wireless. Sometimes immediately, and sometimes after a minute, but it always works if I do this.
