I've also seen this a couple times. Much like the Spanish Inquisition, I never expect it. I can't reproduce when it happens, but I have found that logging out and back in my account will make the numbers reappear. Ironically, the first time I noticed the problem, I tried to take a screenshot and it just started working again. Maybe super + sysrq does something?
