I eventually got the problem sorted out by following the instructions that Marcobra gave me. They appeared not to work at first but on a second attempt they did.
Briefly, when I had got Ubuntu 11.04 running, there was a message to say that my hardware could not run the Unity desktop. I had a look in "Additional drivers" and saw that an Nvidia driver had a green dot beside it but there was a message saying that the driver was recommended and was activated but not in use. As I could only boot by going into Recovery mode and choosing "failsafex", I had another look at "Additional drivers" and decided to try the Nvidia driver labelled "173". After this was downloaded and installed I rebooted and got the Unity desktop. I then had another look in "Additional drivers" and saw that the new driver was activated. The "Additional drivers" windows also contained the message "activated but not in use". It clearly was in use because I could now use Unity whereas I could not before. Is it possible that Ubuntu is reporting a driver as not being in use when, in fact, it is? I spent ages trying to get the previous driver "into use" (when it appears to have been the wrong driver anyway) and started to wonder if I was going to have similar problems with the new one. However, given that the upgrade stalled at some point, perhaps the subsequent difficulties in getting a working system running may account for the problems with the graphics driver -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781337 Title: A problem with Ubuntu 11.01 and Nvidia driver? -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
