I've had the same kind of problem for several month now (it actually began after I switched from Dapper to Edgy). I'm running 2.6.20-15-386 now, but I still have these random system freezes, with the same kind of short sound loop. It happens almost everytime I reenable the flash plugin and play for a few minutes. It also happens sometimes with mplayer or vlc. No hint from memtest either. No log in /var/log/kern.log, or in /var/crash...
