Confirmed same behavior here -- desktop effects disabled, yet glxgears gives 35 - 40 fps.
32-bit, Dell Inspiron e1505, Intel 945GM/GMS/GME Express. Running from Live CD, since the last time I upgraded before trying it out, I got burned. BTW, can anyone here recommend a good, stable version of Kubuntu to run with this chipset? 9.10 -> 10.04 killed me with Intel graphics bugs in the new X.org driver architecture so I rolled back to 9.10, and I haven't been able to figure out if it's stabilized yet.
