This same problem just happened to me while playing back a video file with vlc. After a few seconds into playback sound suddenly stopped and video got really choppy until it stopped completely and a lot of disk activity started happening for no apparent reason. After 5 minutes of unsuccessful attempts to either kill vlc or restart the computer I was forced to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power button. After reboot everything seemed fine so I tried playing back the video again with the same result. After this second forced shutdown the root filesystem got corrupted and so I had to use the live-usb to repair it. The video file in question seemed to be corrupted at the end of it, but I don't know how that caused all this big mess.
