I have the same problem with My Acer Aspire 4820TG For all kernels < 2.6.38.3 I can boot, but for any newer kernel it's just a blank screen.
This is only the case when I have switchable graphics enabled in BIOS (it boots perfect on just the discrete card) and am running the non- proprietary driver for my ATI5650 card. It boots using fglrx , but then vgaswitcheroo doesn't work.
