Post #15 has to be the way to go. It merges the best of flexible, fast, and thorough, in a user-friendly way.
You cannot prevent people from installing programs that have no knowledge about ZG. Therefore, you always will need a thorough search. Having a "locate" every now and then is not good enough, because the user could well search for a file before "locate" has picked it up. However, if ZG can link into the file system itself (or the file system can notify ZG of changes), ZG would be instantly aware of any change.
