Sorry for posting this often, but for my USB device the solution turned
out to be even simpler than what I described before:

(1) Type into terminal:
gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

(2) Add those to lines to the file and save
blacklist arusb_lnx
blacklist ar9170usb

(3) Reboot your system

This is all that is needed to make your usb networking device work if
you experience this bug.
