OK, after doing the above apport-collect, I moved it 15 feet away, did
NOT plug it in.

Wifi disconnected after 10-30 seconds.

Two dialog boxes appeared asking to connect (about a minute each time).
Each time the wifi symbol just kept rolling out.

Then moved it back next to the router and it reconnected instantly.

And then I typed this. Now I will do another apport-collect ...

** Description changed:

After distro upgrade to Natty, wifi will only connect if signal is a
full four bars (e.g. in same room as router). After moving the laptop to
a room where the signal is two or three bars, the wifi disconnects in
seconds. After a while it shows the annoying authentication dialog, but
never connects. Moving the laptop back to a full four-bar signal
reconnects it instantaneously and stays on forever.

Same machine booted into Windows partition never drops the connection in
  the same rooms.

Before the Natty upgrade, wifi would only drop connection after some time
(hours?) of inactivity (and would show the annoying connection dialog rather
than automatically reconnecting). I'm not sure if this bug is an exacerbation
of that bad behavior.
