update: the problem doesn't exist in the mainline kernel. i installed different versions (eg. 2.6.38.5, 2.6.37, and 2.6.35.6) of the kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, and in all of them i was able to suspend and resume flawlessly.
