I have exactly the same problem, hardware is: Intel i5 chipset with 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
using a fully patched Ubuntu 11.04. This bug happens to me both, when using metacity (so the 'no effects') and compiz. See this screenshot for explanation: http://i.imgur.com/ntMct.png I worked in firefox on workspace 3 and switches over to a gnome-terminal running vim on workspace 2.
