Rather, sounds like the gnome control tool is not giving you the results you expect. (It listens for the lid event and applies previously saved configuration information.) Since it sounds like you can make it work properly by manually calling xrandr, then it is likely there is just some aspect to gnome-display-property's algorithms that doesn't handle your use case the way you expect.
