Public bug reported: install of kubuntu-desktop does the same. I don't think that this is right, i only wish to have more desktop environments available, that doesn't mean that i want a new splash screen or a new GDM, the original ones which came with the Ubuntu install are just fine, and indicate rightly that this is an Ubuntu Linux booting, not some derivative.
