Also, if we've followed this solution: http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2010/04/26/lucidubuntu-10-04-high- resolution-plymouth-virtual-terminal-for-atinvidia-cards-with- proprietaryrestricted-driver/ to get high-resolution boot splash in 10.04 or 10.10, the "vt.handoff=7" will prevent the splash from showing up. Hence it needs to be removed from /etc/grub.d/10_linux.
